Hi! I’m Simon’s Mom, and I help parents with my experience and knowledge to learn about special education, transitions to adulthood, and disability rights.
Simon is 21, and he was diagnosed with PDD-NOS at 2 (a diagnosis that was changed to autism when he reached school age) and diagnosed with ID (intellectual disability) at 12.
He enjoys being a part of Special Olympics, and takes part in their bowling, basketball, and track and field events every year. He also enjoys playing baseball with the local challenger team. He loves Blue’s Clues, and one of his comfort items is a Blue’s Clues notebook that he carries everywhere with him - yes, his favorite is Steve. He loves going out to eat, going shopping, especially to the mall when we get chocolate chip cookies as a snack, and going to the movies.
I’m just his mom. But as a graduate of the Texas Partners in Policymaking program, an advocacy and self-advocacy organization for people with disabilities, I gained experience in advocacy, communication, ARDs, and IEPs. In addition to running the local Parent Support Group and being a member of the local school board’s parent advisory committee, I also mentor other parents and attend (and offer) trainings and seminars.
